In Which We Grew, 2024
This installation examines the complexity and, at times, the ambiguity of emotions held by the women in my family and the spaces where those emotions exist. As I rediscover family photos I’ve seen all my life, the same questions arise: what was on their mind? What were their worries or fears at the moment? Do they feel the same uncertainty that I do? I consider the existence of these parallels between the women in my family who experienced girlhood in vastly different circumstances, as I ponder my transition from girl to woman.
The paintings, combined with audio elements, call to the physical space that makes up my family and home, the experience of moving through a full household, catching bits and pieces of stories, multiple stories at once, and even the quiet moments of solitude. In these spaces, we learn to navigate our relationships with ourselves and others - until we eventually leave and create our own version of the spaces in which we grew.
